02 — Step by step
How to get your car driving licence
- 1. Trial lesson
You drive a first stretch, we look at your level and you choose automatic or manual. You get a first estimate of the number of driving hours. - 2. Theory
You learn the theory online and take the CBR theory exam, from age 16. A passed theory exam is valid for 1.5 years. - 3. Driving lessons
90-minute driving lessons with a regular instructor in a regular lesson car, through the city and the area around Groningen. - 4. Authorisation at the CBR
In Mijn CBR you authorise the driving school with your DigiD. Then we can book your practical exam. - 5. Practical exam
From age 17, at the CBR in Groningen and in your own lesson car. Passed? Then you apply for your driving licence at the municipality.

How many driving lessons do you need?
It differs per learner: experience, pace and the choice between automatic and manual make the difference. In an automatic you often need less lesson time, because you do not have to change gear. Our packages show the range most learners fall into.

Frequently asked questions about getting your licence

Do I have to pass my theory before I start driving lessons?
No. You can study theory and take driving lessons at the same time. You do have to pass your theory exam before you take your practical exam.

How long is my theory exam valid?
According to the CBR, a passed car theory exam is valid for 1.5 years, from the day you pass. In that time you have to pass your practical exam.

How long does it take to get your driving licence?
That mainly depends on how many driving hours you need and how often you have a lesson each week. In the trial lesson you get a first estimate of the number of driving hours.

What happens if I fail my practical exam?
Every lesson package includes an exam guarantee: if you fail your first practical exam, we will book a new practical exam for you at no cost if you ask. The conditions are in our terms and conditions.
